Supporting Myasthenics in the UK and Ireland

Editorial Notes

Myasthenia Gravis Association (MGA) is a Registered Charity No. 1046443.  It has been going since 1976 and is now in its 30th year.  It covers the UK and Ireland and has over 60 local branches.

Myasthenia Gravis (MG) means severe muscle weakness.  It can be fatal and affects all ages and genders.   MGA funds patient care; also research aimed at effectively blocking the immune attack that weakens the muscles.  There is no cure.

Between the ages of 15-30, 75% are female and between the ages of 60-70, 60% are male.  Associated thymoma has a peak incidence of 40-50 years.  In the UK the prevalence is around 1 for every 10-20,000 people.  A typical four-GP practice is likely to have at least one MG patient.

Advice, help and information is available from MGA (based in Derby).  Local support groups (branches) help break down isolation by giving members and their families an opportunity to meet and share experiences.  We also provide an Internet website (http://www.mga-charity.org) which includes a Forum where people can gain access to the international community who are interested in Myasthenia Gravis (MG).  The website also provides a statistical breakdown of sufferers by UK postcodes.
